Some believe they were cross-bred between primitive spitz types and eastern Mastiff-type dogs but others think they may be one of of the ancient breeds that exists before that period. Temperament:
Chow Chow is friendly and faithful to its owner and family members but is aloof and reserve with strangers.
Care and Training:
Regular grooming of the Chow is necessary to prevent matting because of their dense coat. Extra care is needed during shedding. Dry shampoo when necessary. Professional grooming is suggested to give Chows the lion clip look. To be a healthier dog, regular exercise like a good daily walk should be given. They can be a challenge to train because of their strong-will. Training should begin early as a puppy.

Activity:
Chow Chow is not an active type and have a tendency to be lazy.
Living Environment:
A house with a fenced back yard is preferred. To maintain its health, it is better to have daily exercise and pay  attention to its condition.
Health Issue:
Entropion:
It is a condition in which the lower eyelid turns inward, allow the dog's eyelashes and fur to rub against the eye causing irritation, excessive tearing and pain. If they are untreated, this irritation can cause infections and painful ulcers on the surface of the eye and may even lead to blindness. Ask your veterinarian to give medication for entropion that is caused by a temporary eye irritation. In many cases, though, entropion needs to be corrected surgically.
"Hot Spot":
A "Hot Spot" begins in an area of skin irritated by flea bite, allergy, soapy remnants after a bath, or other irritant; the dog scratches or chews the area enlarging the opening, then the area becomes infected. Hot spots are warm, swollen, painful patches of skin that exude pus and serum, and tend to give off a foul odor. For treatment, clip all remaining hair away from the infected area to allow air to dry the area and promote healing.  Gently cleanse the area with a surgical soap. Depending on the extent of the hot spot, taking oral antibiotics and applying topical antibiotic-steroid cream on the infected area may be needed. The dog must be restrained from doing further damage to this area.
Life Span:
A healthy Chow Chow is expected to live for 12 - 15 years.
